Dear ISM families,
The calendar reads July 30, which means that August is just around the corner, and in fact, that school begins in 3 weeks! YIKES! As much as I love school and can’t wait for this place to be filled once again with students, teachers, and staff, summer is also wonderful and I’m surely feeling that I haven’t gotten my fill of it just yet! No doubt you can relate as these last weeks have certainly given us some magnificent Minnesota weather!
After bidding our good-byes on Friday, June 11, at the all-school picnic, 15 ISM HS students, SLC Christy Hensley, parent Kerima Brattland, and I rose early on Saturday morning to embark on our ISM Against Hunger trip to the Dominican Republic. As you’ll recall, the ISM community successfully raised the money for and packed 285,000 meals which we were able to deliver to deserving families through Impact Lives, whose mission of “transforming communities one life at a time” became a reality for us as trip participants. Not only did we deliver food, but we built a house for a deserving family. Most importantly, in addition to providing food and shelter, we had the opportunity over the 10 day trip to return to two specific migrant villages or bateys, as these makeshift communities are called in the DR, to interact with the children and grown-ups in meaningful ways. In the end, these people transformed each of us in significantly, and we are anxious to share with all of you when we return to school.
Now we have our sights set on new goals for community service for the upcoming 2010-2011 school year, and we are ramping up! We are particularly enthusiastic about our new endeavor, which we have titled ISM Against Hunger goes local! To raise money for this project, which will focus on local organizations and emphasize student volunteer work, we are holding a YARD SALE on SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 25.
We need you but more importantly we need your donations of used items to make this event a huge success! As I look about my home, I cannot wait to unload such things as perfectly good clothing, video games, and such that were left behind by my college bound kids. Perhaps you have small appliances, sports equipment, kitchen items, books, toys, or clothing that are gently used. Clean your house. Donate to a good cause. SAVE THE DATE and SAVE YOUR STUFF!
Check out the attached flyer and look for more details to come. See you in 3 weeks!
Warm regards,
Sue Berg
